Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Stock Market Game? The Alabama Stock Market Game (SMG) is an exciting 10-week, on-line stock trading experience. Students in grades 4-12 begin with a virtual $100,000 and purchase stocks & mutual funds listed on the exchanges. Teams with the most valuable portfolios at the end of the 10 weeks win their competitive division.

Who can play? Private and public school students and youth groups in grades 4-12 play in separate divisions, Lower (grades 4-8) and Upper (9-12). The State is divided into North and South Regions. See www.alcee.org for Region divisions. Schools are assigned to Regions according to geographic location.

What does it cost? The Game is just $15 per team, with a 10% discount for 5 or more teams per teacher. There are scholarships for qualifying schools based on need (limited availability). Team scholarships sponsored by New South Federal Savings Bank.

Who can use the Game? The Game is terrific for Economics, Social Studies, Math, Language Arts, Business, Technology, Gifted, Agri-Science, and Consumer Sciences!

When does the next game start? Dates for Fall and Spring Games can be found at www.alcee.org. and www.stockmarketgame.org. And you can learn before your kids do! Check website for free Teacher  Promotional games and dates.

Are there prizes for students and teachers? Yes, there is more than $10,000 in cash and prizes for students and teachers during the school year. One outstanding teacher will win a trip to New York City and the NYSE Teacher Workshop.

What about the materials?  All of our materials are free! Easy to use and easy to teach! There are Guides and Lesson Plans for you. The online Teacher Support Center is correlated by subject area and keyed to state and national standards. Every teacher receives a QuickStart CD-ROM, an SMG Promo DVD, the History of the Stock Market DVD, and other classroom materials.

But is there teacher support? Absolutely! Teacher support is just a few clicks away at www.stockmarketgame.org. Have an unusual situation or just looking for creative ways to teach the material and involve your students?

Our SMG Coordinator/Trainer and Teacher Involvement Coordinator is Wanda McAbee.  Mrs. McAbee has 20 years experience with the Game and can answer any question you have by email, wandamcabee@economicsouth.org, or call 866-326-0585.

Why has the Council chosen to offer the Stock Market Game?  SMG offers superb curriculum materials, and superior sponsorships that allow for more discounts, scholarships, and prizes. In addition, the Stock Market Game is the only classroom experience approved by the NYSE and the Securities Industry Association.

I have played another stock market program; do I need to attend a workshop?
You are not required to attend a Stock Market Game training workshop. However, if you are new to a stock market curriculum, we strongly recommend you attend an SMG workshop (visit www.alcee.org for a list of upcoming workshops). Every workshop earns you 2-6 clock hours and we always have wonderful special prizes for participants!

Ok, I’m ready to play the Stock Market Game! How do I get started? Register for a SMG workshop at www.alcee.org or contact SMG Coordinator Wanda McAbee at wandamcabee@economicsouth.org or call Toll Free (866) 326-0585.
